Synopsis
Native Gardens is a sharp contemporary comedy that follows two couples who become next-door neighbors in Washington, D.C. Pablo and Tania Del Valle, a young Latino couple expecting their first child, move in next to Frank and Virginia Butley, an older white couple who have spent decades cultivating an award-winning garden. What begins as a friendly welcome quickly unravels into an escalating property line dispute, exposing generational, cultural, and class tensions simmering just beneath the surface of polite suburban life. With wit and warmth, the play examines immigration, privilege, ambition, and the often unspoken assumptions people carry about race and belonging, all while keeping the tone light, funny, and deeply human.
Characters
Pablo Del Valle: A Latino man in his late 30s to early 40s, a lawyer striving for partnership at his firm. Charming, ambitious, and eager to please, Pablo is proud of his Chilean heritage but navigates the pressure of assimilation and professional success.
Tania Del Valle: A Latina woman in her mid-30s, pregnant, working on her PhD dissertation in anthropology. Tania is sharp, idealistic, and deeply connected to her Mexican roots, often the voice of progressive values in the household.
Virginia Butley: A white woman in her late 60s to 70s, a high-ranking engineer who has spent her career as one of the few women in her field. Virginia is no-nonsense, accomplished, and fiercely protective of her home and routines.
Frank Butley: A white man in his late 60s to 70s, retired, and a passionate, almost obsessive gardener whose prized flower beds are at the center of the dispute. Frank is sentimental, stubborn, and deeply attached to tradition.
Audience Note: we are seeking 3-4 ensemble members in brief supporting moments.
